Shaker Door With Mid Rail
A 18 × 48-inch door has an unsplit 44.1875-inch-tall panel. With the centered planning rail, each of two panels is 20.9375 inches tall; the full-length stiles remain 48.0000 inches.
What changes when a center rail divides the insert?
Keep the outside door and side frames unchanged. The added horizontal member uses the same shoulder-to-shoulder span as the other rails, so its blank length includes the same measured end tongues.
The two-panel heights include engagement at both the outer rail and the center rail. Halving the old panel cut height would miss the new groove engagement and the separate fit allowance for each insert.
This page uses a centered three-inch rail as a planning example, not a required structural detail. To check the upper panel with the existing calculator, open the separate half-frame link; the outer-frame link deliberately retains the full finished door height.

Two worked choices for this front
The middle-height door: compare the unsplit panel with each new insert before adding a rail to the order.
Finished front 18" (18.0000) × 48" (48.0000); two stiles at 48" (48.0000), two rails at 14 1/4" (14.2500), cut panel 14 3/16" (14.1875) × 44 3/16" (44.1875).
Centered-rail option: each of two panels is 14 3/16" (14.1875) × 20 15/16" (20.9375). Hinge start by height: 3. Check one upper half-frame panel.
The taller option: count two panels and one extra rail rather than treating the split as a cosmetic mark.
Finished front 18" (18.0000) × 72" (72.0000); two stiles at 72" (72.0000), two rails at 14 1/4" (14.2500), cut panel 14 3/16" (14.1875) × 68 3/16" (68.1875).
Centered-rail option: each of two panels is 14 3/16" (14.1875) × 32 15/16" (32.9375). Hinge start by height: 4. Check one upper half-frame panel.
Questions about shaker door with mid rail
Is the center rail blank the same length as the top rail?
For the equal-stile and equal-tenon example here, yes. Both span the same distance between stiles. A changed joint or unequal side geometry requires its own check.
Why not divide the old panel height by two?
The center rail replaces visible opening height but also creates new groove engagement. Each separate panel has its own total allowance, so a simple division uses the wrong reference surfaces.
Does the outer-frame link model a mid rail automatically?
No. It opens the existing full-size frame calculator. The separately labeled half-frame check reproduces one centered panel without inventing an unsupported URL parameter.
