How Wide Should Shaker Door Stiles Be?

On the 9-inch-wide door, the two 2.25-inch stiles occupy 50.0% of the width. The cut-panel width is 5.1875 inches; compare other borders in the table before choosing the face proportion.

How much of a narrow front will the side frames occupy?

Compare both side frames against the finished door width, rather than choosing a border from a wide display door. The frame-share column counts the two vertical stiles only; it is not the percentage of the entire face covered by frame material.

On a narrow front, the same frame can dominate the width while leaving a small panel. On a broad front its proportion falls. Use the panel-width result to judge that visual difference before applying a single frame style across the room.

Proportion does not select the joint or hinge. Keep sufficient actual material for the chosen construction and fixing; the micro guide covers the special limitations of a very thin border.

Two worked choices for this front

The narrow door: compare the regular and broad-frame options before accepting the remaining insert.

Finished front 9" (9.0000) × 30" (30.0000); two stiles at 30" (30.0000), two rails at 5 1/4" (5.2500), cut panel 5 3/16" (5.1875) × 26 3/16" (26.1875).

The wide front: see how the same frame occupies a smaller share without changing the frame stock itself.

Finished front 36" (36.0000) × 30" (30.0000); two stiles at 30" (30.0000), two rails at 32 1/4" (32.2500), cut panel 32 3/16" (32.1875) × 26 3/16" (26.1875).

Questions about how wide should shaker door stiles be?

What does frame share measure here?

It is the combined face width of the two stiles divided by finished door width. It excludes the top and bottom rails and does not measure total frame area.

Should all cabinet fronts use the same stile width?

That is a design choice. Check the narrowest panel and the adjacent drawer proportions before standardizing; a consistent measurement can still look very different on unequal front widths.

Can this proportion select compatible hinges?

No. The hardware requires its own cup, fixing, edge-distance and load checks. A visually acceptable ratio does not establish enough material for the actual hinge.
