Shaker Door Panel Thickness

For a 0.5000-inch panel in a 0.2500-inch groove, back-rabbet removal is 0.2500 inches. The 0.7500-inch option removes 0.5000 inches; measure both actual surfaces before machining.

Will the panel edge fit the measured groove?

Measure the actual sheet and groove rather than relying on a nominal label. A thicker center can fit a narrower groove only if the construction permits reducing the edge to the required thickness.

The table calculates a back-rabbet depth as the thickness removed to leave the selected edge. It does not choose the rabbet’s width into the panel, the cutter or an acceptable running fit. Check those against the actual frame and tool setup.

When the sheet already matches the groove, the arithmetic removes nothing. If the measured panel is thinner than the groove, removing more material cannot tighten the fit. Outline expansion space is a different measurement from this front-to-back thickness check.

Two worked choices for this front

A half-inch center in the selected groove: calculate removal without altering the outside panel outline.

Measured stock 1/2" (0.5000), selected groove 1/4" (0.2500): remove 1/4" (0.2500) at the back edge. Retain the measured edge and test its front-to-back fit separately from the perimeter allowance.

A thicker center: review the remaining edge and tooling before interpreting the subtraction as a machining plan.

Measured stock 3/4" (0.7500), selected groove 1/4" (0.2500): remove 1/2" (0.5000) at the back edge. Retain the measured edge and test its front-to-back fit separately from the perimeter allowance.

Questions about shaker door panel thickness

Is the back-rabbet depth also the rabbet width?

No. Depth removes thickness; width describes how far the rabbet extends inward from the edge. The groove engagement and actual construction determine that separate distance.

Does nominal quarter-inch plywood always fit this groove?

No. Nominal purchasing labels can differ from measured sheet thickness. Measure the actual edge and check the fit on scrap from the same material.

Will reducing the panel outline fix a loose groove?

No. The outline controls perimeter engagement and movement space. Front-to-back looseness comes from the edge thickness and groove width, so diagnose those surfaces separately.
